Carnation

  1. INTRODUCTION:

CARNATION is one of the important commercial cut flower of the world. Carnations are grown in almost every climate. In temperate zones mostly in glasshouses, in sub tropic areas, in plastic & glasshouses as well as in open air & in tropic areas more or less shaded. Carnations are excellent for cut flowers, bedding, pots, borders & rock gardens. Due to it’s excellent keeping quality, wide range of forms, ability to withstand long distance transportation and remarkable ability to rehydrate after continuous shipping, Carnation is preferred by growers.

CARNATION belongs to the family ``Caryophyllaceae’’, the genus ``Dianthus’’ and species ``Caryophyllus’’.

The carnation varieties can be divided into two main groups:

1. Standard Varieties:

The standard Carnation has one large flower on an individual stem. It was the first type of carnation used for large-scale production.

2. Spray Varieties:

The spray Carnation has several shorter branches with smaller flower on each branch. These varieties were developed less than 50 years ago in USA.

2. PROSPECTS OF THE PROJECT:

The weather in Europe is very cold during the winter season i.e. from November to February, most of the time, the temperature is below 0 deg. C. and covered with snowfall. Due to these climatic conditions, CARNATION are rarely grown only in heated glass houses, which is economically very expensive but the weather in our country is suitable to grow quality flowers in winter season.

The farmers are getting good price in the local market for Carnation. Apart from the fair temperature & humidity, India is bestowed with plenty of sunshine and has not expensive labours. With all these positive factors and farming experience, it is easy to produce good flowers during every season, the demand of flowers increases during Christmas, New year day, Valentine day, which are during winter season. The domestic market at New Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad & Bangalore is also having good sales potentiality for CARNATION throughout the year. It is therefore evident that there is good scope for setting up a project for CARNATION flower for local as well as export marketing.

3. NEED OF THE PROJECT:

The promoter has studied various floriculture units in Maharashtra and found that the project can be executed very well at the land owned.

We have shown the suitability of the site to `GM GREENHOUSES’, an expert agency in greenhouse technology, who has inspected the site. Normally following points are observed in site selection.

3a] Quality of soil.

3b] Quantity and quality of water.

3c] Proximity of project to market.

3d] Sunlight priority of building and other infrastructure.

4. REQUIREMENTS:

4A] SOIL STRUCTURE:

Carnations can be successfully grown in any type of soil. The main factors for excellent production are consider as under:

  1. The PH of soil should be in between 5.5 to 6.5 to get maximum efficiency in absorption of nutrients.

  2. The optimum EC during vegetative stage 1.2 ms/cm and during generative stage is 1.5 to 1.7 ms/cm.

  3. The soil should be highly porous and well drained to have better root development and better penetration of roots. The root development of CARNATION is upto 25-30 cm in soil.
